How to Safely Use a High Pressure Washer Without Damaging Surfaces
While high pressure washers are great cleaning tools, improper use can cause damage to surfaces—or even injury. Here’s how to stay safe while getting the best results.
First, choose the right nozzle. A zero-degree nozzle produces a concentrated jet that can gouge wood or paint, while a wider spray (25–40 degrees) is safer for cars, siding, and furniture.
Second, maintain the right distance. Keep the nozzle at least 12–18 inches from the surface. Start farther away and gradually move closer until you find the right balance of cleaning power without damage.
Third, test on a small area first. Surfaces like wood, paint, or vinyl can be sensitive. Always check before covering a large area.
Fourth, use detergents when needed. Sometimes lower pressure with soap works better than blasting at full power, reducing the risk of harm.
Lastly, prioritize personal safety. Wear goggles, gloves, and closed-toe shoes. Never point the washer at people or pets.
By understanding proper techniques, you’ll maximize cleaning efficiency while protecting both your property and yourself.
