Why Borewells Fail: Role of Submersible Pumps in Water Recovery

 Borewells fail due to declining groundwater, excessive water withdrawal, improper drilling, or sediment accumulation. But inefficient submersible pumps also contribute. When a pump is oversized or undersized, it can create imbalance—either withdrawing too much water or failing to lift sufficient water even when available. High-speed pumps cause sand lifting, reducing borewell lifespan. Poor installation or low-quality pipes can lead to leakage and air gaps, resulting in pump strain. Modern submersible pumps with multi-stage impellers and energy-efficient motors can help maintain stable water flow. Installing a secondary recharge system, such as a rainwater harvesting pit, improves water levels around the borewell. Proper pump selection, regular maintenance, and sustainable water usage are key to preventing borewell failure.
